Route 92 Car Accident
By: Post Standard
Updated 12/12/2009
Cazenovia, NY -- A 20-year-old from Manlius was in critical condition this morning following a one-car accident on Route 92 in the town of Cazenovia, according to the Madison County sheriff's office.
Dennis J. Buckley of 203 Garrett Drive was taken to Upstate University Hospital with serious head and neck injuries after crashing on Rt. 92 just west of the village of Cazenovia around 3:15 a.m.
According to a news release from Undersheriff Doug Bailey, Buckley was driving a 1997 Chrysler Concorde west on Rt. 92, about one mile east of the intersection with Temperance Hill Road, when he apparently lost control of the car on a curve.
Buckley's car left the roadway and struck a milepost marker and a utility pole, which was severed. The car rolled multiple times, Bailey said.
Buckley was wearing a seat belt and was not ejected from the car, the release states.
A passing motorist reported the accident, and Buckley was extricated from the wreckage by members of the Cazenovia Volunteer Fire Department. He was transported by CAVAC ambulance.
Deputies have yet to determine a cause for the mishap.

GOES INTO SERVICE
On Wednesday March 25th Cazenovia Engine 131 was
placed “in service” by Chief Sam Usborne. After three years of researching, writing specifications, reviewing
bids, overseeing fabrication, mounting equipment, and training it was a great
achievement to finally have this unit ready for action.
Engine 131 will be “first due” on all fire and Motor Vehicle
Accidents in the Cazenovia fire district while Engine 132 gets moved to “second
due” in district and “first due” to all mutual aid fire calls.
Our new engine is a 2008 Custom Stainless Steel mid-ship
engine.Features include a Cummins
ISM-450 hp motor, Hale Qmax pump with Foampro A/B foam system feeding the front
bumper, both crosslays and one hosebed discharge. An Akron
“Saberjet” deck gun nozzle with 30’ remote tether was added to keep
firefighters from the hazards of tripping or falling off the top and allow the
operator to deploy the deck gun without tying up a firefighter to manually
operate it.For the first time in
Cazenovia a front intake with pre-connected hard suction and low profile
strainer was added to keep portable ponds and tankers in front and out of the
way because ladders, hose, cord reel are located at the rear of the apparatus
and also to keep room in front of the structure for the truck.Other features include pac-trac with
reflective striping mounted in the compartments for tool mounting, a tool box
in the pump operators compartment for fitting organization, a hydraulic
combi-tool for extrication and a special compartment for the stokes basket
(complete with RIT equipment) and backboard storage.

us as consultants, factory liaisons and equipment suppliers. They truly enjoy and respect the fire service
and helped us without ever having any financial motives.

2008 Firefighter LODD Summary
The USFA reports there were 114 on-duty Firefighter fatalities in the United States as a result of incidents that occurred in 2008.
Each of the following states suffered more than 5 on-duty losses:
North Carolina (11) LODD's
Oregon (9) LODD's
Pennsylvania (9) LODD's
California ( 8) LODD's
New York (7) LODD's
Illinois (6) LODD's
Missouri (6) LODD's
Ohio (6) LODD's
As the USFA continues to collect and evaluate information regarding the 2008 on-duty firefighter deaths, here are some of the early known facts:
Preliminary estimates indicate that heart attacks and strokes were responsible for the deaths of 50 firefighters (43.8%) in 2008. This shows a decrease from 54 of the 118 (45.7%) firefighters in 2007.
In 2008, 26 on-duty firefighters died in association with wildland fires.
This loss is more than double the 11 wildland firefighter fatalities in 2007.
The 2008 toll is also above the annual average of 21 wildland fire-associated fatalities over the past 10 years, 1999-2008.
For 2008, 64.9% of all firefighter fatalities occurred while performing emergency duties.
Twenty-nine firefighters died in 2008 as the result of vehicle crashes.
Fourteen of these deaths involved aircraft crashes.
Fifteen firefighters died in motor vehicle crashes.
Six firefighters were killed in crashes involving their personal vehicles and three died in water tender (tanker) crashes. These two vehicle types have historically been most often involved in crashes that take the lives of firefighters.
Ask yourself what would you do if you come upon a school bus with it's RED lights flashing backing into a driveway. You'd probably STOP, right. The same goes when fire trucks have their lights flashing, even when backing into the station. Recently there have been many, many times that cars will basically go off the road to cut around the front of us when we are backing in, besides from being dangerous, it is also illegal to do so. See Vehicle Traffic Law in the main menu. So please for our safety and yours, when you see our lights on, STOP.

Dogs Rescued from Manlius House Fire
By Siobhan Garrett WTVH5
Nine people are homeless and their dogs needed to be pulled from a burning house on Smith Street in Manlius Friday night. The fire broke out around 8pm but the shape of the house made it difficult to initially locate the flames. The Manlius Fire Department also says they were initially called to the next street over for a smoke condition before being dispatched to the fire.
The family was not home at the time the fire broke out but three dogs were rescued. A fourth dog was also home but escaped. All four are expected to be fine. Firefighters think the fire may have started in the basement and then spread through the house. The family of 9 is being assisted by the Red Cross.

Blaze Destroys DeRuyter Business
by Aaron Gifford- Syracuse Post Standard
Wednesday October 01, 2008, 3:35 PM
A DeRuyter engine repair business was destroyed in a fire this afternoon, firefighters said.
The shop, located at 1838 Route 13 and owned by Harmon Perry, was
engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived at the scene
around 2:30 p.m., said New Woodstock Fire Chief Thomas O'Hara.
A car, a truck, a tractor and several tools were inside the building at
the time and couldn't be salvaged. There was no reported explosion,
though huge plumes of dark black smoke could be seen several miles away.
Firefighters made sure the blaze was contained to the garage building and let the fire burn out.
"It's less for him to clean up," O'Hara said. "Insurance-wide, it's a total loss."
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze,
though O'Hara said it appears to be accidental.Perry was on the
property at the time and called 911. No injuries were reported.
About 30 firefighters from New Woodstock, DeRuyter, Georgetown, Cazenovia Erieville and Fabius responded to the scene.
