Cazenovia Fire Department Awards
The Cazenovia Fire Department annual banquet was held on February 1, 2008. At the banquet the 2007 "Chief Award" was presenteed to Gil Hodges. Gil has been a member of the Cazenovia Hook and Ladder Company since 1998. Prior to joining Cazenovia, Gil was also an active member with the Erieville fire department. Gil has climbed the ranks over the past 10 years and is currently the 2nd Assistant Chief for the department. The past four years Gil has been instrumental in the department receiving FEMA grants (every year) to offset many operating and equipment costs of the department. This past years grant application was awarded to the department in the amount of 260K which will be applied toward the department's purchase of a new engine and will displace our nearly 30 year old American LaFrance Engine. Gil has also been vital in the design and specking out this new engine. The next time you see Gil, please give him a much deserved thank you!
The 2007 Cazenovia Fire Department's Rescue/EMS Award recipient was given to Don Koglmeier. Don joined the department in 2001 and in that time he has spent many, many hours in school taking several EMT courses. Currently Don is a AEMT (Critical Care) provider and also a member with CAVAC. In addition to the medical side of the fire department, Don is also an interior firefighter, a member of the Madison County Dive Team as well as the County Rope Rescue Team. When you see Don around town, wish him a big Congratulations.
What's Black and Green and Swimming in Cazenovia Lake?
The Madison County Underwater Search and Rescue Team. On Sunday February 10th, the Madison County dive team held a ice dive training session at Cazenovia Lake. Divers use this opportunity to hone their skills as in water divers, rope tenders or safety divers. In the event of an incident, it takes a minimum of six members to conduct a search and rescue. An operation will consist of at least two divers, two line tenders, and two back-up divers.
On Sunday, January 27th Cazenovia and Erieville Fire Departments held a joint ice/cold water rescue practice at Eaton Brook Reservoir. These training evolutions prepare department personnel on performing quick, safe rescues of victims which have fallen through the ice. Every year people have to be rescued due to falling through thin ice. Most of these include ice fishing and snowmobiling.

of a windmill farm off of Peterboro Road.
There

The

Stucture Fire in Morrisville
Mother and children escape fire in Morrisville
Posted by Scott Rapp December 29, 2007 3:51PM - Syracuse Post Standard
A
Morrisville woman and several children escaped a fire that heavily
damaged their two-story rented house at 128 E. Main St. early Saturday
morning.
"Flames were shooting through the roof 20 to 30 feet high" when
firefighters first arrived shortly after 2:40 a.m., Morrisville Fire
Chief Rick Gorton said.
A apparent faulty extension cord to a space heater in a back bedroom appears to have sparked the fire, Gorton said.
Judy Granger was asleep in the room when she was awakened by the fire.
She and an undisclosed number of children all escaped to safety, Gorton
said.
A Morrisville firefighter, who was not identified, sprained an ankle when he slipped carrying a hose.
The fire, which was put out around 9 a.m., heavily damaged the rear of
the house and caused moderate smoke and water damage to the front of
the structure, Gorton said.
About 50 to 60 firefighters from Cazenovia, Eaton, Madison,
Morrisville, Munnsville and Smithfield responded along with
Smithfield-Eaton and Southern Madison County ambulances.
Meadowhill Road Fire
Fire Damages a Home in Cazenovia
From: WTVH5 News
The fire started around 5:30 Wednesday afternoon. Crews found an
electrical box in the basement of 4192 Meadowhill Road in Cazenovia on
fire. They quickly extinguished the blaze but it had already spread to
the walls on the first and second floor. There was minor smoke and
water damage to the structure but the house will have to be completely
re-wired. Crews also cut a hole in the roof to let smoke out.
Firefighters helped an elderly woman out off the second floor. She was
taken to the hospital for observation but is expected to be fine. Two
firefighters were also treated for minor smoke inhalation but were
released. Cazenovia Fire Chief, Sam Usbourne, says weather did not slow
crews down. The house was very far from the road but firefighters were
still able to quickly put out the blaze.
Mutual Aide to Manlius - Structure Fire
Fire on Hobnail Road in Manlius 9/23/2007 3:48 PM By: Web Staff - News 10 Now
MANLIUS, N.Y. -- It took fire fighters almost an hour to put out a fire
in Manlius. It happened on Hobnail Road around 10:30 Sunday morning.
Investigators say it may have started on a stove in
the garage. Fire officials say they had some problems getting to a few
hot spots in the house.
"The fire got up in to the attic and above the ceiling
and stuff. They had trouble getting in there to knock it down and
because
of the pitch on the roof, we couldn't get our ladder up close enough
initially. We had to put ground ladders up and it makes it tough when
you have a structure with those kinds of roofs," said Manlius Assistant
Fire Chief Paul Whorrall.
No one was injured in the fire.
